Gambling Commission appoints lived experience panel as part of safer gambling drive

The Gambling Commission has appointed a Lived Experience Advisory Panel tasked with collaborating with the regulator to make gambling safer.

The panel met for the first time earlier this week and is made up of people with a wide range of lived experience of gambling harms, including those affected by someone else’s gambling.

The group will work with the Gambling Commission helping to advise it on an array of policy development initiatives, including providing feedback and input to implement any incoming changes to the Gambling Act, with the UK Government review ongoing.

The advisory panel replaces the interim Experts by Experience Group which was formed last year to provide similar advice, evidence and recommendations on how to raise industry standards.

Additionally, the Lived Experience Advisory Panel will join the Advisory Board for Safer Gambling and the Digital Advisory Panel, as an official Gambling Commission advice group.

Gambling Commission CEO Neil McArthur said: “As already proven by the input of the Interim Group, the views and perspectives of Lived Experience in our decision making is invaluable and is already having a positive impact in our work in addressing gambling related harm.”

A Lived Experience Advisory Panel spokesperson added: “We are pleased that the Gambling Commission has recognised the importance of listening to people who have been harmed by gambling and welcome their real commitment to ensuring that this can happen.”

Meanwhile, the Gambling Commission also published its latest update on the delivery of its strategy to reduce gambling harms, which provides detailed information on each initiative it is undertaking with industry stakeholders and partners, in its responsible gambling drive.
